The first British heart transplant was performed in 1968 by a complex team of 18 skilled surgeons and nurses from the National Heart Hospital located in London, Marylebone. Aldo it took more than seven hours to achieve the goal the results were worthy. The operation was lead by a South African born doctor called Donald Ross. Although in the beginning the patient's name was not known, some data about the donor were given to press. Patrick Ryan a 26-year old worker was sent at Hospital from King's College and his heart was taken respecting technical specific procedures immediately after his death was installed. The condition characterizing the patient was satisfactory and the operation has gone uneventfully so all the task performed were
successfully finished. Aldo the current reaction to heart transplant was acceptable the doctors were expecting a critical stage in the next 10-14 days. The actual length of operation was, after Mr. Ross declarations, around two hours and the other was reserved to preparing techniques and practice. The historic operation was about to take place at 1150 GMT when the hospital's consultant in psychology, Donald Longmore was brought at King's College Hospital. At 1330 GMT he was escorted back at the National Heart Hospital. All the press was camped outside and several rumors about the success or about the failure of the operation were started. In order, the British operation occupied the tenth position at word's scale, and the pole position is reserved to the operation performed by Dr Christian Barnard in Cape Town, South Africa.
In 2006 at 38 years since the first operation was performed a son may need the same transplant type his dad had 23 years ago. In 1983 Jimmy Ryan needed a heart transplant so de raised 100.000 USD with the help of his community. But nowadays, Patrick his soon faced the same need. He was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy a disease that is affection the heath's muscle, and his condition prohibits physical effort.
The Ryan family is trying to obtain again the money needed for the surgery like in an endless nightmare, and the living expenses are high because of his condition.
The Ryan family and friends have held a garage sale this weekend in McFarland to help Patrick cover his insurance premiums, prescriptions and living expenses.
But Jimmy, who had owned a popular bar in downtown Madison, thinks back to the generosity of his neighbors when he was diagnosed in 1983 at age 41.
"This community takes care of its own," he said in a recent statement.
Friends and neighbors raised money doing their best through whatever means possible - including garage sales, bake sales and benefit concerts especially- for Jimmy Ryan. The efforts netted $150,000, and Ryan underwent successful surgery. The endless nightmare was yet solved because the skill possessed by surgeons and the gift they made, life itself is more significant that anything else. The dream was started in 1968 and it goes on and on and on…
