Physical Activity Reduces Stroke Risk

      Volume: 12 (07/08/2005)
Stroke, the third leading cause of death in the U.S., can be beaten off with the help of increased leisure time physical activity, such as running, heavy gardening or swimming, a new study shows. Walking or biking for half an hour a day will definitely help decrease risk of ischemic stroke (stroke caused by a blood clot), researchers say.

The study, recently published in "Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association", aims to observe the association between physical activity level and the risk of ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage or intracerebral hemorrhage.

For ischemic stroke, the percentages were 7% and 14% respectively.

The study was supported by grants from the Finnish Academy, the Ministry of Education and the Finnish Foundation for Cardiovascular Research.
